The Story Of The Resurrection

The crucifixion was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun had stopped shining, and the curtain of the Temple was torn in two. Luke 24:46 Jesus then called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my Spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last breath.

Joseph and Nicodemus, both high ranking members of the Jewish ruling council, went to ask Pontius Pilate for the body of Jesus in order to place it into the already prepared tomb of Joseph. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. When Pilate heard from the centurion that he had truly died, he gave the body over to Joseph.

Nicodemus had brought about 75 pounds of various mixtures of myrrh and aloes to treat the body of Jesus. The two men placed Jesus’s body into the tomb and rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb to seal it. Mark 15:47 Mary Magdalene and the wife of Cleopas were also there.

Mark 16:2-8 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the two women took the spices they had prepared and went back to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the entrance, but when they entered, they did not find the body of Jesus. Luke 24:4-8 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lighting stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, then be crucified and on the third day be raised again.” Then they remembered his words. Luke 24:8

When they came back from the tomb, they told all of these things to the eleven and to all of the others. But they did not believe. Peter however got up and ran to the tomb. John 20:5-7

As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’s body had been, one at the foot and one at the head. Jesus standing there said to her, “Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “If you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him!” Jesus said to her “Mary!” she turned to him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni,” which means teacher. Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” Then Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news;” I have seen the Lord!” and she told them all of the things that he had said to her.

Luke 24:13-35 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, with their faces down cast, one of them named Cleopas asked him, “are you only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened here in these days?” “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a Prophet, powerful in the Word and deed before God and the people. The Chief Priest and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel, and what’s more, it is the third day since all of this took place, in addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said that he is alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.“ Jesus told them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets hear have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” Beginning with Moses and all of the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all of the scriptures concerning himself. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took the bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. At that point their eyes were opened and they recognized him for the first time, and then he simply disappeared from their sight. They then asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he opened the scriptures to us?” They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. Luke 24:35

John 20:19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” after he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord!

John 21:26 A week later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came in and stood among them and said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands? Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. ”Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God.” Then Jesus told him, John 20:29 “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Jesus did many more miraculous things in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in the Bible.

Matthew 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him they worshiped him. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20

Mark 16:19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into Heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.

Mary Magdalene

Even though there are multitudes of paintings of Mary Magdalene and we are visually inspired by real life sculptures of her. We see her most often represented on the day that signifies the holiest day in the Christian calendar, “Easter,” It is the day that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and the moment when Mary discovers the empty sepulcher where Jesus was laid. Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene and Mary the wife of Cleophas, the sister of Mother Mary, we see all three courageously at the foot of the cross where Jesus was crucified. They anointed him while being taught by his parables and met him when he gloriously appeared to them after his crucifixion and resurrection. They were truly essential ingredients in this world changing story.

Archangel Michael

As we try to imagine what Archangel Michael might look like we just have to read in the Bible about how articulate God is when addressing the details of the building of Noah’s Ark, and the Tabernacle with all of its furnishings and adornments. How God instructed Moses with every minute detail to create the Ark of the Covenant, the dwelling place of the Lord in the Most Holy Place.

When God was instructing Moses how to prepare for the Lord’s Passover. God leaves nothing out in preparation for the feast and the placing of the lamb’s blood on the doorframes and headers of the homes of God’s people.

Exodus 12:12-13 God tells Moses, “On that same night, I will pass through Egypt and strike down every first born, both men and animals and will bring judgment on all of the Gods of Egypt.

It would not be surprising to see Michael decorated with images of important historical events like The Great Flood on his belt buckle, and a cherubim on each shin guard. You might find the Flaming Sward that protects the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden on his wrist guards. You would surly see a gleaming ornate sward of the Spirit ready to battle against evil on his side.

Then in 2 Kings 19:35 God calls on Archangel Michael, referred to as the Angel of the Lord, to cut down and slay 185,000 men to defeat the king of Assyria in their camp.

According to Numbers 22:22-35, God was very angry with Balaam because he did not do what God had commanded him to do. So God sent angel Michael, the angel of the Lord to oppose him. With a drawn sword Michael communicates through Balaam’s donkey in order to grab his attention.

Angel Gabriel

Few creatures are as misunderstood as the angels. According to the Bible, these heavenly messengers are spiritual, supernatural beings, not human beings who have earned wings in the next life by being good in this one. Also in the Bible when people encounter an angel, they don’t say “Aww” like we do when we see the artist Raphael’s chubby cute little baby cherubs with wings. On the contrary, if and when we see an angel, you would probably be so filled with awe, you might just fall to the ground and hide.

Gabriel is one of the only two angels whose names are mentioned in the Scriptures. The other angel is Archangel Michael. Whatever epic assignments Gabriel had previously undertaken for the Lord, this one surely topped them all. He was sent to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to speak to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. Luke 1:26-27

Mary was so young; she didn’t seem old enough to have a child yet, much less this child. Never the less, Gabriel delivered this message: “Greetings, you who are highly favored. The Lord is with you.” Then the angel said to her, “do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” Mary asked, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” Gabriel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” “Elizabeth, your relative is going to have a child in her old age and she was said to be barren but is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:36

Matthew 1:20-24, Gabriel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name of Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Daniel 8:15-22, Daniel had a vision of a ram and a goat. The interpretation of the vision came through Gabriel. “While I Daniel, was watching the vision and trying to understand it, there before me stood one who looked like a man, and I heard a man’s voice calling from the room,” “ Gabriel,”” tell this man the meaning of the vision.”

Genesis 19:1 the two Angels of the Lord, Gabriel, and Archangel Michael arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. Genesis 19:12-13, the two angels said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else hear sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? If you do, get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry of the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.” These two angels are not just the voice of the Lord but they do carry out numerous disciplines and destruction on God’s command.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the artist, Miles Tucker, the work began when the details start to appear as answers to ancient questions that are brought to light. Questions like in the work of Michaelangelo’s Pieta’, how did the adult, lifeless body of the crucified Jesus get placed in into Mother Mary’s lap and into the arms of the grieving mother? She must have had help, so who was there to help her?

In the subject of the resurrection of Jesus, where did his new clothes come from that he wore as he appeared to the eleven disciples and to hundreds more of his followers.

When Jesus’s body was placed into the tomb after his crucifixion, it was still Passover. Therefore according to the law of Passover anyone that touches the dead body of a person during Holy Passover would be considered unclean and you would be exiled from the population for the period of time until you were redeemed. So who cleaned the bloody body that was also covered with dirt and dust from his caring his cross to the crucifixion site? Who cleaned all of the dried blood and dirt from his hair to make him fresh and presentable? Mary Magdalene never had time to complete all of that.

Who rolled the large stone from the entrance of the tomb?

Who were the two angels sitting in the tomb where Jesus was laid and talked to Mary Magdalene?

Why was Jesus so unrecognizable to people so close to him and knew him so well?

Wings or no wings on angels? When mankind first acknowledged that there were angels at God’s command, artists have depicted them as having feathered wings like majestic birds because they seem to move about effortlessly. The truth is angels are Spiritual beings created by God to serve him in ever capacity he needs at any given time. Angels can appear and reappear anywhere at any time through the power of God. In the Bible when God has sent Angel Michael and Angel Gabriel to deliver a message for God to whomever they appeared to has never mentioned anything about wings as they have described what they saw.

Why was it so important for no one to touch the crucified body of Jesus? There were many ancient Jewish customs that were highly respected and carried out to the finest detail. The strict instructions on how to handle and treat the body of Jesus during the Holy Passover was commanded by the Lord God. The instructions were passed down from the time of Moses and to be carried out till the end of time.

To the Hill

They took him to the Hill

Then laid him in the tomb

God came down and breathed on him

Death has no grip on him, the SON OF GOD

Now we can join him in his Heavenly Kingdom

Where for all Eternity

Together, we will PRAISE HIS NAME

As we study God’s Word, the bible teaches us just how God wants us to live our lives and that there is life after death for those who follow his teachings. God’s only Son was sacrificed for the forgiveness of our sins. By the resurrection of Christ on the third day in his tomb, he shows us that there is everlasting life. Jesus’s death on the cross was beginning of the crucifixion story. The resurrection in the tomb was the glorious climax to that timeless story.

The veil of wonder is lifted from of the many mysteries of the Bible when the truth speaks louder than words.

The truth is, Jesus needed help in the tomb as he was resurrected and God provided that help with the Angels of the Lord. Arch Angel Michael and the Angel Gabriel teamed up and rolled back the large stone that sealed the entrance to the tomb. They provided the clothing that Jesus needed in order to make his appearance into the public. The two angels were then able to clean Jesus’s body that was covered with blood and dirt from his crucifixion ordeal. During Passover, the ones that lovingly carried Jesus’s body from the cross to the tomb were not able to clean his body during Passover. It was God’s law not for anyone to touch a dead body during Passover. They would have become unclean and would have to go into hiding until they were cleansed and made holly again.

Until 240 B.C. it was thought that the earth was flat. Once the truth was known it was universally accepted as common knowledge that the earth was round. So the truth of the details surrounding the miracles of the resurrection are no longer a mystery but finally understood.

By not honoring the details of the resurrection it diminishes God’s Glory in the miracles of everlasting life.
